Founded in 1946 and located at Amsterdam Science Park, it is part of the Institutes Organisation of NWO, the Dutch Research Council. CWI has strong international links and a global reputation for innovative research; it is famous as the birthplace of the programming language Python and was a founding member of ERCIM, the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics. By creating synergy between mathematics and computer science, CWI pursues fundamental and long-term innovation. Its strength lies in discovering and developing new ideas that benefit society and the economy as well as other scientific fields, and its research is rooted in practical questions about transport and communication networks, internet security, cryptography, energy systems, health care, machine learning and scientific computing. Its research groups cover algorithms and complexity, cryptology, computational imaging, database architectures, evolutionary intelligence, formal methods, life sciences and health, machine learning, networks and optimisation, scientific computing, and stochastics. CWI recruits PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and tenure-track and senior researchers, and offers internships and master's projects to students.
