It was formed in 2008 by merging WL | Delft Hydraulics, GeoDelft and parts of TNO and Rijkswaterstaat, and it carries the tradition of more than a century of Dutch hydraulic engineering research. Deltares is a not-for-profit foundation with no shareholders or owners; by statute it is part of the vital infrastructure of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and as a knowledge institute for applied research it receives public funding to maintain essential research facilities. The question that drives its research, in the words of its managing director, is how to keep deltas, coastal and river areas safe, sustainable and liveable, now and in the future. Its work covers flood risk, coastal and river engineering, water quality and ecology, groundwater and the subsurface, geotechnics and infrastructure, and it develops widely used open-source modelling software. Deltares is one of the five TO2 institutes for applied research and employs several hundred staff from more than forty nationalities at its sites in Delft and Utrecht. Deltares recruits researchers, specialists and advisers, and offers PhD trajectories together with universities as well as internships and graduation projects.
