It is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and was formed on 1 January 2011 through the merger of the Institute of Netherlands History, a research institute of the Dutch Research Council, and the KNAW's Huygens Instituut. It is located in Amsterdam, where it forms part of the KNAW Humanities Cluster together with the Meertens Institute and the International Institute of Social History. The institute's research covers the history of the Netherlands and its culture from the Middle Ages to the present, including political and colonial history, the history of science, literary and textual scholarship, and the study of correspondence and archives. It is a pioneer of digital humanities: it publishes scholarly editions and databases, builds research infrastructures and tools for the analysis of historical texts and data, and develops methods for open science. Its researchers work with universities, archives and museums in the Netherlands and abroad on projects that make the country's historical and cultural sources accessible and interpretable. The Huygens Institute recruits PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, senior researchers, software developers and data specialists, and offers internships.
