It is one of the seven university medical centres in the Netherlands and combines patient care, research and education on a single campus in Leiden, next to the Leiden Bio Science Park. Under the motto "Driven by health", LUMC describes its ambition as evolving from delivering care to providing care for health, guided by three core values: personal, connecting and enquiring. LUMC's research practice ranges from pure fundamental medical research to applied clinical research. Its scientists work in departments and interdisciplinary programmes covering, among other fields, immunology and infectious diseases, oncology, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, neuroscience, regenerative medicine, population health and medical data science, and LUMC houses several national reference and expertise centres. As a faculty it educates medical, biomedical and health-science students and trains a large community of PhD candidates who defend their theses at Leiden University. LUMC recruits PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, clinician-scientists, principal investigators and research support staff, as well as clinical and nursing staff.
