The institute aims to understand the neural circuits that create our mental functions and how they change in brain disorders; its strategy focuses on building critical mass, investing in advanced techniques and technologies, and strengthening its national role as a central neuroscience hub under the motto "Master the mind". Although the focus is on the fundamental mechanisms underlying brain function, the NIN's research spans the development, plasticity and ageing of the brain and is often linked to clinical questions, with brain disorders the primary cause of lost quality of life. Its research groups leverage a cross-species approach, from humans to non-human animals and back, and use state-of-the-art neurotechnologies in vision, perception and cognition, sleep, circadian rhythms, neuroregeneration and psychiatric disorders. The institute also houses the Netherlands Brain Bank and the Netherlands Sleep Registry, and shares its campus with Amsterdam UMC. The NIN recruits PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, group leaders, research assistants and technicians, and offers internships to master's students. Vacancies are published on its own site in English.
