It started in 1965 as the scientific institute of the Dutch College of General Practitioners, and… Nivel, the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research, is an independent, non-profit research foundation that contributes to the quality and effectiveness of the Dutch health-care system. It started in 1965 as the scientific institute of the Dutch College of General Practitioners, and its domain gradually expanded from general practice to the whole of health care. Nivel is based in Utrecht, in the centre of the country, and employs about 170 people: some 110 scientific researchers and 60 staff in research-related and operational positions. In 2023 its turnover was 16.6 million euros. Nivel studies health care from the perspective of patients, professionals and the system: access, quality and safety of care, the health-care workforce, primary care, pharmaceutical care, patient experiences and health literacy, and the organisation and financing of care. It runs several national registration networks and panels, including the Nivel Primary Care Database, and it is a partner in international comparative research and a WHO Collaborating Centre. All research results are made publicly available. Nivel recruits researchers from junior to senior level in health sciences, medicine, sociology, psychology, economics and data science, offers PhD positions in cooperation with universities, and takes on interns.
