Alongside collecting, processing and issuing blood products, Sanquin carries out research and education in the field of blood, helping more than 100,000 patients a year and working, in the words of its mission, "together with the donor for a better life for the patient". Its headquarters and research laboratories are in Amsterdam, and since 2024 it has worked in a new structure of eleven departments. Sanquin Research is one of the leading blood research institutes in Europe. Its scientists study immunology, haematology, transfusion medicine, blood cell biology, plasma proteins and the epidemiology of blood donation, with research lines in immunohaematology, immune regulation, blood coagulation, cellular therapies and diagnostic innovation. The research division works closely with Amsterdam UMC and other university medical centres, hosts the Landsteiner Laboratory with the University of Amsterdam, and trains PhD candidates who defend their theses at Dutch universities. Sanquin recruits PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, senior scientists, research technicians and laboratory staff, and offers research internships to bachelor's and master's students.
