It selects a small number of undergraduate and postgraduate students by national competition and combines their training with degrees from the University of Pisa, alongside its own PhD programmes and research institutes. Sant'Anna works in two broad areas: the experimental sciences — biorobotics, life sciences, agricultural and environmental sciences, and information and communication technologies — and the social sciences, covering economics, management, law and political science. Its BioRobotics Institute is among the leading European centres for prosthetics, surgical robotics, bio-inspired machines and wearable devices, and the school is regularly ranked among the best small universities in the world.
