TNO describes itself as "the innovation engine of the Netherlands": it supports the Dutch government in carrying out statutory and other public tasks, and works with industry to strengthen the earning power of the country. Its work is organised in research units covering defence, safety and security; the energy and materials transition; healthy living and work; information and communication technology; mobility and the built environment; and industry. TNO is one of the five TO2 institutes for applied research, alongside Deltares, MARIN, NLR and Wageningen Research, and takes part in a large share of the national and European applied-research programmes. Its 2026–2029 strategy sets three priorities: a more focused and dynamic portfolio, more impact through valorisation, and stronger customer and market orientation. For researchers TNO recruits scientists and engineers at every career stage, from PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers to senior scientists and principal consultants, and offers internships and graduation projects to master's students.
