Its faculties occupy historic buildings across the city, including the Palazzo Nonfinito and San Marco, with science and engineering on the Sesto Fiorentino campus and the medical school at Careggi. With around 50,000 students and twenty-one departments, Florence teaches the full range of disciplines. Its research is strong in physics and astrophysics — the European Laboratory for Non-Linear Spectroscopy and the Virgo gravitational-wave observatory at nearby Cascina are part of the same regional research environment — as well as in chemistry, agricultural science, architecture and restoration, art history, archaeology and the classics, medicine and pharmacology.
