Its recovery, carried out on the Coppito… The University of L'Aquila (Università degli Studi dell'Aquila) was founded in 1952 and rebuilt its academic life after the earthquake of 6 April 2009, which destroyed much of the city centre and many university buildings. Its recovery, carried out on the Coppito and Roio campuses, is part of the wider reconstruction of the city. The university teaches around 19,000 students in seven departments, covering information engineering, computer science and mathematics, industrial and information engineering and economics, civil, construction-architectural and environmental engineering, physical and chemical sciences, life, health and environmental sciences, biotechnological and applied clinical sciences, and the humanities. Its research is notable in mathematics and computer science, in physics — through the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, the largest underground particle physics laboratory in the world, situated a few kilometres away — and in seismic engineering and earthquake risk.
