Résumé de l'offre
The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany seeks an Academic Researcher for the CHIMERA project, focusing on grid-forming hybrid power plants essential for the energy transition. Responsibilities include developing EMT simulation models, transferring them to RTDS real-time simulation, and investigating interactions between hybrid plants and active grid assets. The role involves scientific coordination within the Co-Simulation Platform, preparing reports, publishing results, and supervising student theses. Candidates require an above-average Master’s degree in engineering or computer science, strong analytical skills, and proficiency in German and English. Basic programming in MATLAB or Python is needed, with preferred experience in power grid simulation tools like PowerFactory or PSCAD. The position offers a full-time salary of 59,300 to 66,800 EUR gross annually and provides an opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. while contributing to future power grid stability.

Description du projet
Your tasks
Grid-forming hybrid power plants are thought to be an essential building block of the energy transition, since they could be a full-fledged replacement for conventional power plants. This is achieved through the intelligent combination of various renewable generation technologies with storage systems to balance out weather-related fluctuations, provide essential system services, and thus actively contribute to the stability of future power grids. As part of the CHIMERA project, the goal is to investigate such concepts for grid-forming hybrid power plants and evaluate them in terms of their technical, economic, and regulatory feasibility. Specifically, your responsibilities will include:
- Development and testing of methods for reducing EMT simulation models of the power grid and their transfer to RTDS real-time simulation, as well as the creation of transmission grid models in PowerFactory and RTDS/RsCAD
- Investigation of system-wide interactions between hybrid power plants and active grid assets
- Scientific and administrative coordination of the work in the CHIMERA work package “Integration of HiL Test Environments into the Co-Simulation Platform”
- Preparation of project reports
- Publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences
- Supervision of student theses
In addition to research activities, there is the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D.
Your profile
- Above-average Master’s degree in electrical engineering, electrical and information technology, electrical power engineering, renewable energy, mechanical engineering, computer science, or a comparable field of study
- Strong analytical thinking skills
- Very good ability to organize one’s own work
- Very good written and spoken German and English skills
- Teamwork and communication skills, determination, and a strong willingness to learn
- Basic programming skills (MATLAB or Python)
- Preferably experience with power grid simulation—RsCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, MatDyn, PSCAD, EMTP, etc.
