Established in 1995 as the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products, it was based in London until 2019, when it moved to a purpose-built headquarters in the Zuidas district of Amsterdam following the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU. EMA coordinates the scientific resources of the national medicines authorities of the EU and EEA member states through its scientific committees and working parties. Its work covers the assessment of marketing-authorisation applications for new medicines, pharmacovigilance and the monitoring of medicines on the market, scientific advice to developers, paediatric and orphan medicines, the regulation of advanced therapies and, increasingly, the use of real-world data, clinical-trial data and innovative methods such as alternatives to animal testing. Its scientific and regulatory staff work closely with academic researchers and clinicians across Europe. EMA recruits scientific and regulatory specialists in pharmacology, medicine, biostatistics, epidemiology, data science and related fields, as well as administrative staff, and offers a traineeship programme for recent graduates. Vacancies are published on its own careers site.
