Descrizione del progetto

Your job

The Dutch government aims to strengthen societal resilience against war and disaster. The military plays a prominent role in these efforts, raising concerns about militarization and its adverse impact. In this PhD, you study how militarization in the Netherlands unfolds and examine its effects.

Your duties and responsibilities include:

  • You conduct a literature review on ‘militarization’ in the context of crises, domestic security, and resilience.
  • You analyze Dutch policy documents to determine whether/how these documents contribute to a militarization of society and whether/how it contributes to militarism.
  • You collect qualitative, empirical data on the implementation of resilience measures (e.g. expansion of military terrains, emergency booklets, citizen mobilization, increased civil-military, and new crisis plans) to critically examine their effects.
  • You write and publish several scientific articles to contribute to critical scholarship on resilience and critical military studies.
  • You contribute to policy and practice by sharing constructive reflections on current and proposed policies, and by presenting your findings.

You will work here

The research is embedded within the chair Sociology of Development and Change , which is led by Prof. Bram Büscher. You will be co-supervised by dr. Jori Kalkman and dr. Sumit Vij.

Your qualities

You are a curious, independent, and motivated student, with an interest in militarization who wants to contribute to our understanding of an important societal issue.

You also possess:

  • A successfully completed MSc degree in the social sciences, such as sociology, anthropology, or public administration
  • Strong research and writing skills, as proven by an excellent Master’s thesis and/or publications in (professional) journals, newspapers, or blogs
  • Demonstrable affinity with domestic security, armed forces and/or resilience
  • Experience with qualitative research, such as interviews, document analysis, visual analysis, and/or ethnographic research
  • The ability to take initiative, be creative, and take control over the PhD process.

For this position you should be fluent in Dutch. In addition, your command of the English language is expected to be at C1 level. Sometimes it is necessary to submit an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language. More information can be found here. Finally, the PhD student will have to provide a certificate of conduct (NL: Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag (VOG)).The certificate of conduct needs to be submitted after the final selection.
