Sintesi dell’opportunità

Karolinska Institutet in Sweden seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher for advanced brain imaging in neurodegenerative diseases. The role focuses on developing PET tracer molecules to detect pathological changes in conditions like Alzheimer’s disease before symptoms appear. Candidates must hold a PhD in medicine, neuroscience, or related fields, with preference given to those who completed their degree within the last three years. Essential qualifications include hands-on experience in neuroimaging, strong statistical skills using R, and a solid publication record. Responsibilities involve processing PET and MRI data, performing statistical analyses, applying for research grants, and publishing results. The position is a fixed-term contract lasting two years, located at the Flemingsberg campus. The institute offers an international collaborative environment, training opportunities, and benefits under collective agreements. Fluency in English is required.

Descrizione del progetto

Do you want to contribute to top quality research?

Novel advanced molecular imaging technology with PET enables us to detect and map pathological changes in neurodegenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer´s disease. Our research aims to develop and characterize new PET tracer molecules which provide new insights into pathological mechanisms long before symptoms of memory problems occur and will make it possible to develop new therapeutic targets for disease modifying therapy in personalized medicine design.

Research group

Our Translational Molecular Imaging Lab has a strong translational approach for characterizing the complex pathophysiological features of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative proteinopathies with focus and understanding of the interplay of neuroinflammation with amyloid, tau and synaptic dysfunction in brain and biofluids. The lab is located in the Neo building at KI Campus Flemingsberg close to the Karolinska University Hospital, Theme Aging, the Aging Brain.

Your mission

We are looking for one talented and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a great interest to work with multi-tracer in vivo PET study, measuring different pathological markers including amyloid and tau deposition, astrogliosis, synapse impairment, combined with cognitive tests, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), plasma biomarkers and MRI. We expect the applicant to take an active role in applying advanced imaging methods for processing and evaluating PET and MRI imaging data in combination with fluid biomarkers, performing basic and more advanced statistical analyses (mainly in R), and preparing scientific manuscripts under supervision and present them to international congresses and ultimately publish them in peer-reviewed journals. You are expected to independently apply for research grants, developing your research profile and contribute to seminars and journal clubs within the division. The group provides excellent training opportunities in an international working environment, national and international collaborations, and possibilities to publish articles in high-impact journals.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

Qualifications

The candidate should have obtained a PhD degree in medicine, neuroscience, psychology or a related field. We seek a person with hands-on experience in neuroimaging and good statistical knowledge aswell as a strong publication record. Social and collaborative skills are very important since the applicant will be working with other research team members, collaborators including supervision of graduate and undergraduate student trainees. Fluency in both written and spoken English is a requirement.

Meritorious:

  • Documented experience within Alzheimer’s disease or other neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Documented experience with software for neuroimaging data processing (i.e., SPM, Freesurfer, FSL) and statistical analyses (i.e., SPSS, R(better)).
  • Documented experience of analyzing clinical data (especially PET and MR images).
  • Documented scripting experience (i.e., Matlab, R).
  • Statistical modeling and machine learning
  • Documented experience in obtaining competitive research funding is considered meritorious.

This is a fixed-term contract for up to to 2 years.
