Postdoctoral researcher

The Ludwig Uhland Institute for Historical and Cultural Anthropology in the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Tübingen invites applications for the position of

Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d, E13 TV-L, 100%)

beginning on or after April 1, 2027 (no later than October 1, 2027). The contract is limited to three years.

This position offers excellent conditions for starting an independent postdoctoral project (Habilitation) in the field of human-environmental relations from an ethnographic and/or historical perspective. At the same time, it provides opportunities for professional development through regular teaching, grant application, and academic administrative tasks, including co-organizing a conference with Prof. Monique Scheer. The institute in Tübingen is a highly attractive workplace, with its departmental structure, flat hierarchies, well-established bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, and a workspace at Hohentübingen Castle.

Responsibilities:

• Conducting independent research for a postdoctoral project (Habilitation) in the area of environmental anthropology and/or history
• Research-related administrative tasks: organizing and co-hosting an academic conference, coordinating the publication of the proceedings, and assisting in the development of grant proposals
• Teaching two seminars per semester (4 SWS) and participating in the academic administrative tasks at the institute
• Active participation in the institute’s academic events

Required qualifications:

• Excellent Ph.D., preferably awarded within the last three years (date of viva or oral defense), in European Ethnology or Social/Cultural Anthropology on a topic relevant to human-environmental relations; a Ph.D. in sociology, history, or science and technology studies with a strong background in qualitative, ethnographic and/or historical methods is also welcome
• Fluency in German and English

Further qualifications:

• Experience presenting academic findings (e.g., at conferences or public lectures) in both languages
• Teaching experience and familiarity with organizing academic events

The successful candidate will be employed at the University of Tübingen as a regular employee.
