It has more than 44,000 students and offers around 200 bachelor's and master's programmes in economics, technology, health care, social work, sports, the arts and teacher training, a selection of which are taught in English and German. The name comes from the Latin fons, meaning source. Fontys combines its teaching with practice-oriented research that it aims to give real societal impact in the Brainport region and beyond. Research is organised in knowledge centres and research groups led by professors of applied sciences (lectoren), on themes such as applied natural sciences and engineering, health and technology, the creative economy, education and lifelong learning, and the future of work. Independent Dutch rankings by the Keuzegids regularly place Fontys among the best large universities of applied sciences. Fontys recruits lecturers and lecturer-researchers, researchers and professors of applied sciences, as well as support staff, and offers internships and graduation projects to students.
