It was created to concentrate technological research at an international standard and to strengthen the transfer of results to industry; it recruits internationally and works in English. IIT employs around 1,800 people at its Genoa headquarters at Morego and in a network of centres in Milan, Turin, Rome, Naples, Pisa, Lecce, Ferrara, Venice and Pontedera. Its research is organised around robotics, nanomaterials, computational sciences, lifetech and the technologies for life sciences. The institute is best known internationally for humanoid and soft robotics — the iCub platform was developed there — and for work in nanochemistry, smart materials, neuroscience and drug discovery, and it holds one of the largest patent portfolios of any Italian research body.
