It is one of the largest institutes of the Academy and is located in Wageningen,… The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie, NIOO-KNAW) is the national research institute for ecology of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). It is one of the largest institutes of the Academy and is located in Wageningen, in a sustainable building on the campus that it shares with Wageningen University & Research, with which it collaborates closely. NIOO's research aims to understand how nature works, in order to conserve and restore biodiversity and to use ecological knowledge for a sustainable society. Its departments cover animal ecology, aquatic ecology, microbial ecology and terrestrial ecology, and its research themes include biodiversity, enhancing soil biodiversity and healthy soils, restoring and rewilding ecosystems, the impact of nutrients and pollution on freshwater systems, the ecology of birds and other animals in a changing climate, and the microbiome of plants and soils. The institute maintains long-term field studies and experimental facilities and shares its data through open-science initiatives. NIOO-KNAW recruits PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, tenure-track and senior scientists, technicians and data stewards, and offers internships and research projects to bachelor's and master's students.
