Its buildings occupy the baroque centre of Catania, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, with scientific departments on the Cittadella campus. The university teaches around 42,000 students through seventeen departments, covering medicine and surgery, biomedical and biotechnological sciences, drug sciences, agriculture and food, civil, electrical, electronic and industrial engineering, physics and astronomy, chemistry, mathematics and computer science, law, economics, political and social science, and the humanities. Its research reflects its setting: volcanology and geophysics around Mount Etna, marine and agricultural science, microelectronics in partnership with the semiconductor industry of the Catania valley, and physics through the INFN Southern National Laboratories.
