Thomas Aquinas studied there in the thirteenth century. Today it is one of the largest universities in Italy, with around 78,000 students and twenty-six departments spread across Naples and the new San Giovanni a Teduccio campus, which houses an academy run with a major technology company and the university's applied engineering activity. Its research spans medicine and surgery, pharmacy, agriculture at the Portici campus, veterinary medicine, all branches of engineering, physics — with a large INFN presence — chemistry, mathematics, law, economics, and an unusually deep tradition in philosophy and the classics.
