Galileo Galilei was both a student and a professor here, and the university's later alumni include the physicists Enrico Fermi and Carlo Rubbia. In 1961 Pisa built the Calcolatrice Elettronica Pisana, the first computer designed and constructed in Italy, and the country's first computer science degree followed in 1969. Pisa is a comprehensive public research university with around 50,000 students and twenty departments. Together with the Scuola Normale Superiore and the Sant'Anna School it forms the Pisa University System, a concentration of research and graduate training unusual for a city of its size. Its strongest fields include mathematics, physics and computer science, engineering, veterinary medicine, agricultural science, medicine and the classics, and it remains one of the most highly ranked Italian universities.
