Erasmus of Rotterdam took his doctorate in theology here in 1506. Its buildings are spread across Turin and the Piedmont region, and it counts among its alumni the Nobel laureates Rita Levi-Montalcini, Salvador Luria and Renato Dulbecco, all of whom studied medicine in the city under Giuseppe Levi. The university teaches through twenty-seven departments covering medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, agriculture and forestry, law, economics, psychology, education, the humanities and the natural sciences. It is a leading Italian centre for the life and biomedical sciences, food science, chemistry, physics and computer science, and it shares the Turin research environment with the Politecnico di Torino, INRiM and the Human Genetics and Candiolo cancer research institutes.
