It is based in Turin and reports to the Ministry of University and Research. INRiM realises and maintains the national measurement standards for the International System of Units and disseminates them to industry, accredited laboratories and public bodies; it keeps the Italian atomic time scale and contributes to Coordinated Universal Time. Its research covers quantum metrology and nanotechnology, optical clocks and frequency standards, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, mechanics, and quantum technologies, and it participates in the European metrology research programmes and in the international comparisons that underpin measurement traceability.
