It performs research into the elementary building blocks of our universe, their mutual forces and the structure of space and time, and for fifty years it has been the home of the Dutch particle physicists. Nikhef is a collaboration between NWO-I, the institutes organisation of the Dutch Research Council, and six universities: the University of Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Radboud University, the University of Groningen, Maastricht University and Utrecht University. It is located at Amsterdam Science Park. Research at Nikhef is international. Its physicists take part in the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, of which the institute is a research partner, in the KM3NeT neutrino telescope and the Pierre Auger and Xenon observatories, and in the Virgo gravitational-wave detector as a member of the European Gravitational Observatory. Theoretical and experimental scientists, engineers and instrument makers work together on detector research and development, computing and data science, and on passing their sense of wonder to new generations of researchers and to society. Nikhef recruits PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, staff scientists, engineers and technicians, and offers internships and master's projects. Vacancies are published on its own jobs site in English.
