It has its main campus in Potenza and a second campus at Matera, the… The University of Basilicata (Università degli Studi della Basilicata) was created in 1982 as part of the post-earthquake reconstruction of the region following the Irpinia earthquake of 1980. It has its main campus in Potenza and a second campus at Matera, the city of the Sassi cave dwellings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The university has around 6,000 students and four departments: agricultural, forestry, food and environmental sciences; basic and applied sciences; European and Mediterranean cultures — architecture, environment, cultural heritage, based at Matera; and mathematics, computer science and economics, together with a school of engineering. Its research is concentrated in agriculture, forestry and food science, geology and hydrogeology, environmental and seismic engineering, and the archaeology and conservation of the region's cultural landscape.
