It takes its name from Magna Graecia, the… Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro (Università degli Studi "Magna Graecia" di Catanzaro) was founded in 1998, having developed from a medical faculty of the University of Calabria established in Catanzaro in the early 1990s. It takes its name from Magna Graecia, the Greek colonial world of southern Italy, and occupies a campus at Germaneto on the edge of the city. The university has around 10,000 students and departments of experimental and clinical medicine, health sciences, medical and surgical sciences, legal studies, and law, economics and sociology. Its academic centre of gravity is biomedical: research covers oncology and molecular medicine, cardiology, nephrology, pharmacology and clinical pharmacology, and the university operates the Mater Domini teaching hospital, now integrated with the Catanzaro university hospital trust.
