Its main buildings stand on… The University of Genoa (Università degli Studi di Genova) traces its origins to the colleges of law, theology, medicine and arts that operated in the republic from the thirteenth century, formally constituted as a university in 1481. Its main buildings stand on Via Balbi in the historic centre, and it also teaches at Savona, La Spezia and Imperia. Genoa has around 33,000 students and five schools grouped into twenty-two departments, covering engineering and architecture, medicine and pharmacy, mathematics, physics and natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. Reflecting the port city and the Ligurian economy, it has particular strength in naval architecture and marine engineering, robotics and automation — in close contact with the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, which is also based in Genoa — telecommunications, marine biology and medicine.
