It is the principal university of western Sicily, with its main campus at Viale delle Scienze in Palermo and further sites at Agrigento, Caltanissetta and Trapani. The university teaches around 40,000 students in fifteen departments, covering medicine and surgery, biomedicine and neuroscience, engineering, architecture, agricultural, food and forestry sciences, chemistry and physics, mathematics and computer science, earth and marine sciences, law, economics, political science, psychology and the humanities. Its research includes marine and coastal science in the Mediterranean, agricultural and food technology, energy and building engineering, archaeology and Sicilian cultural heritage, and clinical medicine with the Policlinico Paolo Giaccone.
