It is unusual in combining a medical school directly with… Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele) is a private university in Milan founded in 1996 and built around the San Raffaele Hospital, one of the largest research hospitals in Italy. It is unusual in combining a medical school directly with faculties of psychology and philosophy, a structure chosen deliberately to set clinical training alongside the study of mind and of ethics. The university teaches around 2,000 students in medicine, biotechnology and medical biotechnology, nursing and the health professions, psychology and philosophy, with several programmes taught in English. Its research is carried out largely within the San Raffaele Scientific Institute, an IRCCS whose work covers gene and cell therapy — the San Raffaele Telethon Institute is a leading European centre for gene therapy — immunology, neuroscience, diabetes and metabolism, oncology and infectious disease.
