Its main campus stands on the hill above the city, and its border position has given it a long-standing international and Central European orientation. The university teaches around 16,000 students in ten departments, covering medicine, surgery and health sciences, life sciences, chemical and pharmaceutical sciences, physics, mathematics and geosciences, engineering and architecture, economics and business, law and political science, and the humanities. Trieste sits within an exceptionally dense research environment that includes SISSA, ICTP, Elettra Sincrotrone, OGS, INAF and Area Science Park, and the university's physics, materials science, neuroscience and marine science benefit directly from those neighbours.
